No, this is not another movie critic on the biopic directed by Jalil Lespert. We leave that to the cinema specialists ! Of course we were touched by the performances of the two protagonists and the remarkable work of the young Pierre Niney. But this is more of a fashion glance, admiring the clothes and colors of the movie. Here are our thoughts…
First of all, what a joy to rediscover the outfits of the designer, his creative highlights like the Mondrian dress, the smoking, the hats and the sumptuous fashion show inspired by Russia in 1976. Truly magnificent pieces lent by the Pierre Bergé Foundation.
It is also very enjoyable to discover the work of the stylist, his creative genius, his vision of the woman, his envy to revolutionize cuts, and the very essence of the house Saint Laurent.
We also enjoyed the more intimate atmosphere of the fashion shows of the 50s-70s, the way the models walked down the catwalk, the beauty codes. The presentations evolve during the movie, escalating to what we know today, a larger audience, the delicate choice of front row guests, almost as fashionable as those who will model. Today, the show also happens in the street, with blogers, street style. It’s interesting to see that the very first show of the designer had somewhat of a veil, softer, more intimate, without any games of lights.
We also noticed how much the stylist lived in accordance with the seasons, preferring the Spring collections and sometimes complaining of having to deliver as many creations in one year. When you think that today, certain fashion houses present collections of ready-to-wear, couture, two cruise collections, one Métier d’Art show, and sometimes even limited edition collections, with on top of that the imagination of a décor and themes always more surprising, we understand that the demands and the production are growing more and more intense.
More than a movie on the life of Saint Laurent, his love story or « stories », we enjoyed immersing ourselves in the heart of the creation, the inspiration and appreciating each outfit like a work of art.
Even if the movie benefited from all those dresses thanks to the support of Pierre Bergé, we still look forward to discover the next movie on Saint Laurent, directed by Bertrand Bonello with Gaspard Ulliel in the main role !
